Here is how the bond works in practice for a San Diego contractor. Suppose a homeowner in Clairemont hires you to replace a roof, pays a deposit larger than the law allows, and the job stalls. If the surety finds the claim valid, it pays the homeowner up to the $25,000 bond limit, and you are then obligated to reimburse the surety for the full amount plus investigation and legal costs. If your credit is damaged, you can usually still be bonded, but expect a higher rate and possibly a collateral requirement. Serious liens, judgments, or a prior unpaid bond claim can lead to a decline. You can pay for one year or lock in a multi-year term at the same rate.
